His Divine Anger

Image
One time Guru Mahārāja (Śrīla Bhakti Dayita Mādhava Gosvāmī Mahārāja), Gaurāṅga Prabhu, and Tīrtha Mahārāja visited the appearance place of Śrīla Prabhupāda in Puri-dhāma to pay obeisances. Suresh Prabhu and I were also present then. All of us took darśana, paid obeisances, and were about to leave.
There was a tenant named Nārāyaṇa Sahu who occupied 3-4 rooms upstairs. He used to sell pakoras (a type of fried food) that contained onion. In order to insult Guru Mahārāja, he began to plead with him in Oriya language to accept pakoras from a poor man like him.
Guru Mahārāja smiled and said, “Nārāyaṇa Sahu knows very well that we don’t eat onions so we can’t accept it.”
But Nārāyaṇa Sahu continued to plead. When he repeated the third time, Śrīla Tīrtha Mahārāja got very angry and his eyes became wide and turned fiery. He shrieked and chided that person. Whosoever was present got scared on seeing his fearful form and foam was coming out from his mouth on both sides. His entire form becam

His Meeting with a Catholic Priest in London

Image
On the morning of Monday, June 26, 2002, Śrīla Bhakti Ballabha Tīrtha Gosvāmī Mahārāja had a meeting with Father Alfred Agius, a Catholic (Jesuit) priest, who served as head of the Westminster Interfaith group which encompassed greater London. This meeting was intimate, with only Mahārāja, Father Agius, and a few other devotees present. After exchanging introductions, Father Agius showed the devotees a number of nice publications he had assembled for the Westminster Interfaith group, demonstrating his sincere dedication to presenting religious perspectives from various faiths. After perusing these materials for some time, Mahārāja engaged in conversation with Father Agius.  He explained the vital difference between the idea of the modern caste system, which is based on birth, and the varṇāśrama system, which is based upon the character of a person. He showed how the varṇāśrama system is a natural thing.  He said, "If someone has the tendency to worship and study scripture, he is a

Remembering Affectionate Exchanges Beyond this Lifetime

This morning, at around 9:30 AM, while Śrīla Gurudeva was taking his breakfast, I conveyed the heartbreaking message of Parama-pūjyapāda Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Mahārāja's departure from this world. As soon as he heard, he was shocked. "Left the body?" He asked, his mouth fell open in shock. He paused for a while and again said, "He left the body? I was informed that his health had improved. Is it not?" I said that there was an improvement after what he had heard about Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Mahārāja's serious health trouble in October but that he left the body at about 3:00 AM today. Śrīla Gurudeva then said, “Everyone has to leave one day. Anytime anything can happen. This cause, that cause is just instrumental.” He took his next spoonful of breakfast and said, "He roamed a lot outside India even at his advanced age. What is good is that he left his body in India and that too in a dhāma."  After a while, he asked about when and where the samādhi would take place.

Surrendering to the Divine Professor

Image
I came to Śrīla Gurudeva Bhakti Ballabha Tīrtha Gosvāmī Mahārāja after becoming his first non-endian full-time disciple. I was initiated in 1995 at Śrīdhāma Vṛndāvana on Baladeva Pūrṇimā at the end of the Rādhā-Govinda Jhulan-yātrā festival of Sree Caitanya Gauḍīya Maṭha. On my second trip to India in 1996, I approached him with the idea to study Sanskrit. Gurudeva replied, "You did not come to me, you came to learn something." It meant I came with the desire not to serve the Guru but to learn something for myself. I clearly understood that Gurudeva gave me a choice to become an independent scholar in Sanskrit or to be his fully dedicated disciple.  I still insisted on my studies anyway. Gurudeva agreed with my desire and allowed me to live in Kolkata maṭha while I was attending Kolkata Sanskrit College, the same college where Śrīla Prabhupāda Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura studied one hundred years before. A professor of Sanskrit there asked me, “What do you want to learn

He Will Go, But He Will Not Go

One day Guru Mahārāja suddenly got very restless and started saying, "I have to go to Goalpara, I have to go to Goalpara!" So Prasād Prabhu asked me to please explain to Gurudeva that I think it's not right for him to travel at this point in time. "Why don't you wait?" I asked. Very sweetly Guru Mahārāja agreed, but when I went out, he started saying the same thing again; "I have to go to Goalpara, I have to go to Goalpara!" That night, I had a dream of Guru Mahārāja in which I saw my childhood school where I studied until standard six. I saw the assembly area of that school and Guru Mahārāja was lying there so very still. I went there and put his head on my lap and asked, "What is happening? Why are you lying here?" He told me, “I am going. I will go, but I will not go.” It didn't make any sense at that time to me. The next day, I came to know that he forced everybody to go to Goalpara. Prahlāda Prabhu informed me after some days t

Understanding His Wellness is Beyond Medical Science

Image
During those days when Guru Mahārāja was becoming restless, he decided he will go to Goalpara. At that time, he would stay awake all night and wouldn't sleep most of the time. He wasn’t particularly well from a doctor’s point of view, so we decided to take him for a one-day check-up. I was standing at the entrance to the hospital and Guru Mahārāja came with 4-5 people in his vehicle. He got down with a big smile on his face and didn’t look at all like he was sick. Later he went into a ward where he could sit and wait until the rest of the things for the tests were arranged. I learned later that he was told he was being taken to my house as my guest–the big, big hospital, otherwise, he would not have agreed to go. When they started injections and drawing blood, he immediately said, "I will go back, I will go back!" It was also difficult to get him into the MRI. He came out and said, let’s go back to the maṭha. From then on, when he felt a little unwell, we tried to see and

Planting a Seed of Bhakti in His Doctor's Heart

I met Śrīla Gurudeva in 2010 through a long, circuitous network of phone calls and recommendations. When I first came to see Guru Mahārāja, he was in his room downstairs in Kolkata. When I saw him for the first time, the main thing that struck me was what a childlike and innocent face he had, not that of a grumpy sādhu. We usually get a feeling when we meet sādhus that they are very serious people, and we maintain distance. But he was very soft-spoken, smiling, and spoke very slowly.  On that first visit, I gave him some medication and then left. Some months passed before I was to return. I was unfamiliar with that part of Kolkata and got lost on the way. After I became familiar with how to reach it, I came more often whenever Gurujī called.  On one of those visits, Guru Mahārāja told his personal attendant to give me the book called Affectionately Yours. Previously I had absolutely no idea of Vaiṣṇava Philosophy. My family was associated with the Rāmakṛṣṇa Mission and worshippers of K

His Kirtan Transcends Time and Space

Words cannot begin to describe the immense good fortune I had to host a kīrtan event for Śrīla Bhakti Ballabha Tīrtha Gosvāmī Mahārāja at an āśrama I was staying at in Hawaii. It was a kīrtan to end all kīrtans!  The divine atmosphere in his presence was full of sweetness. My heart was experiencing a dawning of nectar in his more than divine association. Adding to this surcharged atmosphere was the chanting of Bhūtabhāvana Prabhu, his kindhearted disciple whose voice emulated a purity that was more than delightful, and a soulful resonance that was deeply soul-stirring. As the evening went on, I felt like we were literally transported into a transcendental realm of incredible bliss, a sweetness beyond human conception—as if we were swimming in a vast ocean of pure honey-like bliss, an immersion that was manifesting due to his inconceivable holy presence; literally opening up the flood gates of the transcendental world of Goloka Vṛndāvana that was manifesting in this dimension. To say th

His Divine Presence Transforms a Hospital Into a Tīrtha

Image
We received the message that Gurudeva is performing the pastimes of illness and whoever wants darśana should go to Guwahati. I was in the office then. The next day six of us traveled by flight from Pune to Guwahati. In the afternoon we arrived in Guwahati and went straight to the hospital (GNRC). We had darśana of Gurudeva from very far as he lay inside the room. That time he was fully unconscious. We had gotten a message from the sevāk team that the situation was very serious.   Gurudeva was on the fourth floor initially. We came back and there was a hall nearby the hospital where devotees would just sit and have conversation. The only topic of conversation was centered around Gurudeva. Everyone's attention was on the floor where Gurudeva was—that was the point from where the soul of that environment existed, the soul of the hospital. There was not even a single time I felt that I am visiting a hospital. It was an environment like the maṭha. Everybody was concerned about Gurudeva

His Special Arrangement for My Dīkṣā

Image
During my first visit to India in 2008, I happily took harināma initiation from Śrīla Gurudeva in Māyāpur-dhāma. Some senior devotees urged me to immediately take dīkṣā then also. I didn’t really understand the reasons to take dīkṣā, and also felt unqualified to even ask for it.  Nevertheless, I went to Śrīla Gurudeva and asked. He gravely inquired why I wanted it, and feeling a little bit conscience-stricken to ask so soon after having received harināma initiation, I replied that the devotees urged me to take it. Śrīla Gurudeva then told me to do some devotional practice first.  After that, I went back to the Netherlands and started, according to my limited capability, and despite my manifold drawbacks and anarthas, to perform devotional practice with a bit more intensity than before. Even though I felt my efforts were inadequate, by Śrīla Gurudeva's blessings, I was able to attend the Navadvipa-dhāma parikramā of 2009. It was a purifying and auspicious time. I went again to Śrīl

The Ever-Increasing Bliss in His Association

Image
Someone may have looked at Gurudeva and thought he was an old and sick man. No! If you can see him, then you can see he is not an old and sick man; he looks very beautiful. In the whole world, you cannot find anyone like this. Each interaction with him I felt was the best and entirely fulfilling; I felt that it could not be better than that. All these things such as his realized logical explanations, his kīrtans, his hari-kathā, his care for us, his beauty—every time I'd meet him I felt that it could not get better than that, but still, it would be better next time and again better next time—beyond all our expectations.  By Guru Mahārāja’s mercy, I could understand, I could directly see that his qualities are unlimited; you can never finish that. Not that you can think, "Now I know Guru Mahārāja." The next time I would meet him, it would be a new higher experience, ever increasing. For our benefit and to teach us by example, most of the time Guru Mahārāja would express hi

His First Meetings with Gurudeva

Image
Our Radha Mohan Prabhu was clerk to my uncle who was an advocate (lawyer). When Guruji stayed at his (Radha Mohan Prabhu's) house, I wanted to see him. Sri Radha Mohan Prabhu said, "Guruji is a great saint. Because we worship Radha Krishna and Mahaprabhu at house, all devotees like us. So he is in our house. We also do not eat items that are not offered." So, I went to see Gurudeva. Along with me was my college friend. I listened to Guruji speak there. I did not understand anything that Gurudev spoke. The language (philosophy) was totally new to me. Now I use those words, but at that time I did not know that terminology. I used to wear shoes and have hair on my head. I was a student then. Listening to Gurudeva, I only understood that he is a Krishna Bhakta. I thought, I want Krishna Bhakti, so I'll go. I did not understand anything more than that. Wherever Gurudev went, I followed him. After a few days, Gurudev was supposed to go to another village and a rive

True Knowledge is Received Under His Guidance

Image
Our Guru-varga, Śrīla Bhakti Siddhānta Sarasvatī Gosvāmī Ṭhākura Prabhupāda's most prominent disciples such as Śrīla Bhakti Pramoda Puri Gosvāmī Mahārāja, Śrīla Bhakti Kumuda Santa Gosvāmī Mahārāja, Śrīla Bhakti Sarana Trivikrama Mahārāja, and many others used to say, "Your Guru Mahārāja is not an ordinary soul and should never be underestimated for His spiritual powers."
Our Gurudeva considers Himself as humbler than of blade of grass and is much more tolerant than a tree. He is the true follower of Mahāprabhu’s teachings and conduct–therefore he can educate others.
I recall the above-mentioned Guru-varga performed the parikramā of Vraja-maṇḍala, Śrī Kṣetra-maṇḍala and Śrī Gaura-maṇḍala along with Gurudeva. In the year 1993, they advised their disciples to follow our Gurudeva in performing parikramā. They also taught that under his guidance, all will get true knowledge.
Gurudeva has been very kind to all living entities. Everybody used to get attracted by his sweet

His Sweet Surprises During Kartik at Ludhiana, 2010

Image
By causeless mercy of Our Most Revered Srila Gurudev, the Kartik-Vrat at Ludhiana started yesterday. To our surprise, only shortly after our arrival, Srila Gurudev suddenly joined evening Harikatha and spoke for more than an hour, during which He gave an introduction to Gajendra-Moksha dialogue in the 8th Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam. Srila Gurudev expressed His desire to participate in the Nagar sankirtan this morning. He woke up and got ready when we entered His room and said that He wants to join the Nagar sankirtan for a very small distance. Devotees could not control their emotions when they heard this and became blissful. Pujyapad Madhusudan Maharaj lead the kirtan with "Jai dau Jai dau" while Srila Gurudev lead the devotees for about 50 m distance. Later, devotees danced in front of Srila Gurudev and proceeded further, while Srila Gurudev went back to His room. Another surprise came with Srila Gurudev's arrival at the house of Sri Anil Dave Prabhu, where Nagar

His Soothing Effulgence

Image
One time I came to Chandigarh to meet Guru Mahārāja right after Kārtika. His sevāks said, “No, actually, Guru Mahārāja is tired now. Kārtika is finished, so there is no more darśana.” But then they said, “No, no, okay, come. Guru Mahārāja’s darśana is open.”  When they opened the door, the whole room was so bright and effulgent and Guru Mahārāja was sitting there with a smile on his face. And I was so happy, so relieved to see him; it was like a shower of relief after burning in the sun of the West.  I sat at his lotus feet and I said, “Guru Mahārāja, I feel so lonely, you’re so far away, I don’t have your association.”  Guru Mahārāja looked a little confused. He looked at me and said, “You are never alone. Kṛṣṇa is always in your heart.”  I said, “But Guru Mahārāja, I feel so far away, please give me your blessings.”  And Guru Mahārāja said so humbly, “Okay, I will pray to Guru-varga for you.”  He is never taking the position of guru, always the position of a servant. His whole life i

His Preaching is Non-different from His Conduct

Image
The Founder Ācārya of Gopīnātha Gauḍīya Maṭha, Śrīla Bhakti Pramode Puri Gosvāmī Mahārāja, who is considered an outstanding personality of this world once commented, “All the Gauḍīya-vaiṣṇavas, sannyāsīs, and saints are parts of my body, but Śrīmad Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Mahārāja is the core of my heart.” We are compelled to think about how he has won the heart of this ideal personality. It is due to his dedicated service attitude since his early life.  Gurujī gives emphasis to practice the instructions of the scriptures before preaching to others. He says, "Don’t follow me, follow my lecture only" is only applicable in the field of politics. Regarding preaching of dharma, he would say that our words will become impactful only to the extent that we follow them in our own lives. Preaching without conduct is lifeless. It will only be entertainment and no one will be benefitted from it. —Śrī Bhakti Vibudha Muni Mahārāja (2015) Srila Gurudeva receiving blessings of Srila

His Merciful Reminders

Image
I would like to share an experience from 2007. During my first M. Tech examinations, my friend and I went together for darśana . She was on one side and I was on the other side. We told Gurudeva that it was time for our exams. Gurudeva looked at me on the other side and said, "Before exams, one has to study." That particular semester, I did not study at all but I never told anybody! How could he know? After that, I studied and somehow passed my exams. I also remember I asked Gurudeva a question: "How can we develop śaraṇāgati to Bhagavan?"  He said, "Ei gulo diye habe na," by these material sense organs, nothing will happen.  Then he said, “If I look upon these buildings with my eyes closed, I will not see anything."  Finally, he spoke the verse granthera ārambhe kari maṅgalācaraṇa . A few days later, I asked, "How can one remember them?" (Guru, Vaiṣṇava, Bhagavan, as instructed in the above verse from Caitanya-caritāmṛta , Adi 1.20)  He sa

A Readymade Ācārya

Image
Once Parama-gurujī asked Parama-pūjyapāda Śrīdhara Gosvāmī Mahārāja that I have made many big maṭhas, whom should I give the responsibility of them? Whom should I make Ācārya?  Śrīdhara Gosvāmī Mahārāja replied, "You have a readymade Ācārya." Parama-gurujī asked, "Who? He said, Tirtha Mahārāja. He is an Ācārya since childhood. We don’t have to make him [an Ācārya]." I heard from Parama-pūjyapāda Puri Gosvāmī Mahārāja that Gaura Nityānanda Themselves dance when Tirtha Mahārāja sings Kirtan." During the inauguration of Puri Mahārāja’s newly established maṭha in Mayapur, our Gurudeva was invited for the feast in the maṭha.  The celebration, which is being celebrated to date, falls during the Holi festival. During that occasion, I was with Gurujī along with other devotees. Puri Gosvāmī Mahārāja ordered his disciples to welcome our Gurudeva with kirtanas by standing at the gate. He further said that you see him as Tirtha Mahārāja, but I see him as Mādhava Mahārāja.

He Never Sees Anyone as His Own Servant

Image
I remember an incident when Tatpara Mahārāja was cleaning Gurudeva's bathroom. He had to go somewhere, so he asked me to finish it. I waited outside and Gurudeva took a long time to come out.  Finally Gurudeva said, "I tried to clean it, but some marks are there. You please be careful."  Gurudeva had been cleaning it himself! When I went to the bathroom, it was completely clean. There were no marks. Gurudeva never thought, these are my sevāks. He called them "our helpers." Once we went to a devotee's house. Many devotees cooked, so there was not a burden on a single devotee.  When we came out, Gurudeva asked, "Have you taken all your utensils or not?" Gurudeva was recording and making note of each and every thing. He was so careful—so considerate. —Hari Prasād Dāsa, Delhi

He Has No Enemies

Image
Many devotees spoke the glories of Gurudeva. Guru Mahārāja is not an ordinary person.  Whatever qualities are told in the scriptures, all of them are manifest in Guru Mahārāja. I am too young to realize who or what a sādhu is, but in spite of that, Guru Mahārāja gave me some mercy to see some of those qualities in him. I heard one particular incident of Guru Mahārāja that resonated with me. Guru Mahārāja was in court, and so many discussions were going on, so many people were abusing Guru Mahārāja. But Guru Mahārāja answered very softly no matter what they yelled at him. Guru Mahārāja came back and it was time for prasād. He said that some more devotees are coming, so please reserve some prasād for them. These were the persons who were abusing Guru Mahārāja in the court. I realized that even for those persons who were abusing him, he had so much love and affection for them that he reserved prasād for them. He is Ajātaśatru, one who has no enemies.  —Rukmiṇī Dāsi

His Divine Presence Rejuvenates Discouraged Devotees

Image
I am a disciple of Śrīla Prabhupāda Svāmī Mahārāja. I have a wonderful story to tell about my meeting with Śrīla Gurudeva in 1997, if I remember correctly. I was living in Hawaii, and we were experiencing a difficult time after the troubles with some of the so-called spiritual leaders in our organization. Many fall downs were causing confusion and resulting in a lack of direction for the ordinary devotees.  A very good devotee friend of mine who was from Indonesia and of South Indian ancestry suggested that a wonderful devotee from India by the name of Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Gosvāmī could be persuaded to come to Hawaii. We were in the middle of a deep discussion of what could be done to help the struggling devotees find proper direction again.  When Mahārāja’s name came up we both exclaimed, “Here is a real vaiṣṇava,” and we should invite him to come to Hawaii. Now remember, I had never met Mahārāja but just by hearing my friend's description of Mahārāja I was immediately inspired.

His Insistence for Respect to Elders and Superiors

Image
This incident happened during those days when our Dehradun maṭha was not yet fully constructed. Gurujī did the morning hari-kathā recitation and kīrtan and then he then stood up. He was smiling and was in a very pleasant mood. At that time, a teenager came and offered obeisance to Gurudeva. Gurudeva asked him whether he did praṇam to his father in the morning, for which he moved his head indicating “No." Gurujī got very angry and his face became suddenly red. Gurujī told him, “Why did you come here without offering praṇams to your father? You have come here to do Kṛṣṇa bhajan? Without respecting your father, you'll not be able to do any bhajan.”  Then Gurujī spoke to him about the life of Prahlāda Mahārāja, his respect towards his father, and how he prayed for the well-being of his father in spite of being tortured by him earlier. After this, the teenager left from there. I did not know who that person was and why Gurudeva suddenly became angry with him. When I inquired from o

He Never Wastes One Moment

Image
Once a devotee came to Gurujī and started criticizing another person. Gurujī heard him patiently and then replied, “From where do you get time to see all this?”  His priority in life was different. His life is all about the Supreme Lord, His Name, His kathā, His kīrtan, and so on. We see his detachment from the material world and attachment to the Supreme Lord. We see that he is detached even from his own body. He would get up early in the morning, lead all the sabhā, and then retire late. He said that his body is for the service of his Gurudeva.  When he exhibited the pastimes of sickness he used to feel sad saying, “I am no longer able to serve my Gurudeva properly. If I am not able to serve my Gurudeva then what is the use of keeping this body?” - Śrīla Bhakti Kiṅkara Dāmodara Mahārāja

He Arranges Everything That is Needed

Image
Śrīla Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Mahārāja was visiting the Lakṣmī Nārāyaṇa temple in Kuala Lumpur. Some devotees organized a program for him. He was elderly and we didn't see anything special. He gave hari-kathā that was very soft. However, when he did kīrtan, it was very loud. None of us could dance like him in front of the deity. In 2010, my Gurudeva left for his eternal abode at the end of December. The following Gaura Purnima, I was going to Navadvīpa.  One of my godbrothers had come to Malaysia for his visa and said, "When you go for parikramā, you must go to see Śrīla Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Mahārāja." He emphasized the word “must."  When I was in Māyāpur, I visited the maṭha one day and asked if I could have darśana of Śrīla Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Gosvāmī Mahārāja. The devotee refused and said I could get darśana at 8pm. I could not come back again, so I was disappointed. Then, one of Śrīla Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Mahārāja's disciples, Rādhāmādhava Dāsa, came to

His Strength in Humility

Image
Guru Mahārāja [Śrīla Bhakti Dayita Mādhava Gosvāmī Mahārāja] did not leave us with his intentions written only in his heart. Already during his manifest pastimes, even two years before his disappearance, he declared and broadcast everywhere:  “If I die, or if for some reason any other difficulty occurs, Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Mahārāja shall sit in my position. I am seating him as my successor. No one can have any objection to this.” As Guru Mahārāja is antaryāmī (inward-knower), having received Prabhupāda's mercy, he also foresaw that in his absence, Śrīla Tirtha Mahārāja would have no difficulty running the maṭha. For this reason, Guru Mahārāja declared Śrīla Tirtha Mahārāja as the next Ācārya before his own departure. When our Gurudeva disappeared, dark clouds in the form of adversities or misunderstanding were cast over the maṭha, but the way that Śrīla Tirtha Mahārāja has preserved Śrīla Guru Mahārāja’s vani (instructions) is beyond words. We have been with him and witnessed t

If We Pray From the Core of Our Hearts, Then We Attain Divine Service Immediately

Image
I was once in Mumbai to attend Śrīla Guru Mahārāja's program. During one of His lectures, He summarized the jīvā 's defects in their practice of surrender and spoke: "Can we say with all our heart, Oh Gurudeva! I only want your service and nothing else? Oh Kṛṣṇa! I only desire your loving service and nothing else! If we say this from the core of our hearts, then we will immediately get the transcendental loving service of Śrīla Gurudeva and Kṛṣṇa." The reality is that we do not aspire to attain Lord Kṛṣṇa and His loving services from the core of our heart. Śrīla Guru Mahārāja explained that if someone only says by mouth that they love the Supreme Lord, it is not worth anything. Loving the Supreme Lord truly means not desiring anything with a materialist mentality. Śrīla Guru Mahārāja said that we must analyze our heart and see if it is truly not desiring anything of this material world. —Sundarānanda Dāsa

His Extreme Amount of Respect in Honoring Prasadam

Image
I heard this from Sri Bhakti Bhushan Bhagavat Maharaj, in-charge of Tezpur math. When Srila Tirtha Maharaj used to sit for taking prasad, he used to say while crying: "I am so fortunate that I got an opportunity to honor prasad." He used to be so immersed in prema that while having prasad, he used to eat the banana leaf plate as well on which prasadam was served. When Guruji came to know about this, he thought Tirtha Maharaj is "bhola nath" (naive) and thus he appointed a brahmachari to be with Srila Tirtha Maharaj while eating prasad to check that he does not eat banana leaf or else he may fall sick. —B P Mahavir Maharaj (Gurudeva's godbrother and sannyas disciple)

His Kirtana Drives Away Impure Elements

Image
When Mahārāji came to Hawaii, his narasiṃhadeva-kirtanas had become popular and well-known. One time the devotees took him down to a beautiful place called Waipio Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. To reach there, you have to go by a 4-wheel drive across streams pouring down from waterfalls and through thick tropical plants and trees. There is also a nice black sand beach in the valley. The devotees took Gurujī there.  The scene was perfect, but then some local residents came nearby and started cooking a barbecue. Gurujī started a rip-roaring (full of vigor) kirtana and shortly after that, a big raincloud came and completely poured down, extinguishing the fire of the persons who were cooking meat. After that, they simply went away.  —Suchandra Dāsī Srila Gurudeva in Hawaii with one very fortunate kitten

He Cannot Accept Protection of Anyone But Supreme Lord

Image
The following incident occurred at a time when there was a lot of terrorism in Punjab. As a result of this unrest, many public programs were discontinued or their timings were changed. Gurujī never discontinued any of his preaching programs, although he might have changed the schedule. Gurujī was about to come to Chandigarh by train. One brahmacārī in the maṭha knew some police persons and arranged for police security in the maṭha and at the station for Gurujī’s arrival. Many devotees used to go to receive Gurujī at the station. As soon as he got down from the train, he was surprised to see the police arrangement and asked whether any VIP was arriving. When he was told that the security was for him, his face which usually wore a soft and beautiful smile became very grave but he did not want to disrupt the enthusiasm of the organizers also. He took them aside to speak to them. "We should have faith in the Supreme Lord. I left my house with a firm faith that Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa is our pr

Bestowing Fearlessness Upon Those Who Reveal Their Hearts to Him

When I was staying in Chakdah maṭha, an astrologer saw my palm and told me that I will get married. I was 28 years old then. I showed it to another palmist and he also confirmed that I will get married before I am 30 years of age. A third astrologer also said the same thing. Those days I was serving Lord Jagannātha in Chakdah by the order of Gurudeva. I was not fickle-minded before. But when I became 28-29 years, I became a little restless. I tried to chant  harināma intently and also chanted a lot of narasiṃha-mantra , but my mind did not calm down. I was feeling that I would fall down and might enter in the family life. I tried a lot, but my mind was not calming down. I had no desire to enter mundane life. I thought to convey the condition of my mind to Gurujī. I thought only Gurujī can bring me out of that state of mind.  Guru Mahārāja was in Tezpur maṭha for the annual function. I wrote my heart's feeling in a letter and posted it to Gurujī. Usually, it takes 6-7 days for a le
